Porto

The wines of Porto are among the most famous Portuguese wines with a fantastic reputation amongst wine lovers across the world. The once inaccessible land in this part of the country has been carefully carved and crafted over time in order to produce the famed Port wines that are both flavourful and full of aroma.

Port wines are cultivated in the Douro region which is the oldest demarcated region in the world and has been given the honour of being classified as a UNESCO world heritage site. The vineyards are dotted around stepped terraces and trail along the banks of the Douro river.

Port wine is an excellent fortified wine that has been perfected over the years, supped and savoured by millions and celebrated as a unique wine from the Douro region in the northern part of Portugal. Typically it is sweet, red in colour and served as a dessert wine. There are different varieties of Port wine including a white version, dry and semi-dry, Ruby and Tawny. The five main grape varieties used are Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão.
