Its grass is the newest Penn A1, used for the first time in Portugal, that makes the greens extremely fast and a challenge to any golf player.
Comparing both courses is inevitable, so we guess we have to wait and see if Aroeira II can be as good or even better, than the classic Aroeira I can.

Aroeira became the largest golf complex in Lisbon area. With the official opening ceremony of the Aroeira II, which took place at the 15th of April, the Portuguese capital started to count with another new golf course designed by the world known Donald Steel.
The classic Aroeira, now named Aroeira I, and enjoying 26 years of successful activity, has been chosen to hold the Portuguese Open twice and the Ladies European Tour, and to continue being the base of the Qualification School of the LET. Professionals like Ballesteros and Olazabal, Roca and Torrance, played in the Aroeira I. Architect, Frank Pennick signed the initial project, later redesigned by Robert Trent Jones.
Donald Steel had a hard job designing Aroeira II, right beside the "old" Aroeira. "This is a dream come true for any architect", he said on his first visit.
Based in a modern concept of golf, the course undulates within pine trees and huge lakes. |
