Portugal’s Golf Courses
Back...
At Belas, renowned US architect William "Rocky" Roquemore created one of his most impressive golf course designs. This 18-hole, par-72 championship course measures 6.380 metres (6,977 yards), with fairways and greens seeded with Penncross and Penneagle grasses.
Construction of the Belas golf course was extremely difficult due to low permeability of the original stony terrain, combined with the tough, thick and low-lying vegetation that covers most of the hilly slopes in the area. The care taken in landscaping and the installation of state-of-the-art sprinkler and drainage systems ensure ideal golfing conditions all year long.
Plots border one of the two 9-hole loops for elegantly designed villas, and set in amongst thousands of recently planted trees. The other loop winds throughout wooded hills and valleys, and from higher points golfers can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, with the Sintra hills and Pena Palace in the background.
Two outstanding holes for their beauty and testing nature are the 2nd, named "Augusta" (in honour of the 13th at the famous Masters course in Georgia), and the 6th, "Jamor" (a really attractive par-5), underscored by the intimidating presence of the Jamor stream which flows alongside and then crosses the fairway before leading to a strategically placed lake in front of the green.
Belas Golf Club offers golfers a complete range of truly personalised services, and the atmosphere is informal and friendly. This, together with the top-class condition and maintenance of the course, creates a lasting memory of the complex, making a return visit worthwhile.
