Barcelos is a council a bit north of Porto and it has a traditional ceramic rooster with a curious story.
The 'Galo de Barcelos' Legend
According to the legend, the inhabitants of the borough were worried because a crime was commited and no one guilty was found. One day, a Galician appeared and, because he wasnt known, he became a suspect. The authorities decided to arrest him but, even after swearing he was not guilty, no one believed him. No one was able to believe that a foreigner could come to S. Tiago de Compostela to accomplish a promise and that he could be zealously devoted to the saint that Compostela venerates.
So, he was doomed to die on the gibbet. But before his execution the Galician asked to see the judge that had found him guilty. When they arrived at the judges house, he was having a banquet with his friends. The foreigner told him, again and again, that he was innocent and, before everybodys disbelief, he pointed at a roasted rooster and said: "The proof of my innocence will be that this rooster sings when Im hanged". As expected, everybody started laughing and making fun of him and, to remove all doubts, no one touched the chicken.
And what seemed to be impossible came true! When the Galician was being hanged, the rooster raised from the table and started to sing. From that moment on, there was no room for doubt so the judge started running to prevent a tragedy. When he arrived he saw that poor man with the rope on his throat, but the knot was loose which saved the mans life.
Released in peace, and after a few years, the Galician came back and raised up a monument in devotion to the Virgin Mary and S. Tiago.
