AlentejoThe Alentejo is a tranquil region where summers are extremely hot and winters are also a bit colder than in Lisbon, its plains are covered in olive trees, vineyards and sheep flocks with a wonderful coast with secluded and private beaches dotted all along.
Its main cities are inland such as the beautiful Évora, a UNESCO protected site famous for its roman past with the temple of Diana, but that’s not the only architectonic style you’ll find, Renaissance churches, Gothic, Romanesque… a real pleasurable visit and no doubt a well deserved World Heritage site. Beja and Portalegre are also important towns in the Alentejo. Beja is near the Algarve with a charming castle interesting museum and even a Visigothic church. Its tranquil atmosphere add flavour to the fascinating architecture you’ll find. Portalegre is by the Spanish border, and located by a national park with many trekking trails for those of you who want to enjoy the fantastic views from a different perspective. The town itself will also delight those of you avid for historical monuments and buildings. |
